This Providence plays rock music for Jesus. The thing is…it’s actually pretty good. I really wouldn’t categorize them as a Christian band but the Jesus-loving is definitely apparent with songs like “Walking On Water” and “The Road To Jericho Is Lined With Starving People” but the songs aren’t preachy and full of constant God references. I am in no way, shape or form an advocate of Christian rock and it’s overabundance of Jesus name dropping and I’m not big on indie rock either with its dainty piano solos and monotonous overuse of acoustic songs, but I have an open mind and I can’t deny the fact that This Providence is a fairly good album. I can’t believe that I just said that about a Christian indie rock band. You can slap me later on.

The thing that I like the most about the album is the variety of songs and musical influences that show up. This Providence sounds like they could have been part of the 90’s Alternative movement. The band originally formed as a pop punk band and that influence rears its head a couple of times and there are a few mandatory folk/indie rock acoustic songs as well. This Providence play some faster songs but those come off sounding like disco rock dance songs and are probably the least enjoyable songs on the disc.

With a lot of indie rock music, there seem to be too many depressing songs that make indie kids want to cry a lot. This Providence avoids the downer songs and instead provides an album full of fun, melodic, upbeat songs that have deeper messages behind them. I wasn’t expecting much from this band being that they were on Fueled By Ramen, which churns out one garbage band after the other, but I was genuinely surprised to hear something “different” come from that label.

Bottom Line: Good music from Fueled By Ramen…for once.
Notable Tracks: The Road To Jericho Is Lined With Starving People, …But What Will They Say?, Walking On Water
