It’s been quite some time since I reviewed a reggae album so it’s a nice change for once. Each year, VP Records releases a compilation called Reggae Gold and it features all the best acts in the dancehall and roots reggae genres. While i’m a big fan of the roots reggae, i’m not really a fan of dancehall and reggaeton because it’s pretty much rap to me. I prefer the REAL reggae, the slow jamming music that doesn’t make me want to reach for my glock and start capping bullets into someone’s ass.
For an album that starts off with the word Reggae, it certainly doesn’t showcase a lot of it. The first two songs are pretty much rap & hip hop songs so I don’t really see a need to have them on here. Oh that’s right, to make money in the hip-hop market. Now I get it. I have no idea why the song “This is why I’m hot” is on here. Oh big deal, it’s slightly remixed with reggae singers over the top of it. That song is so bad it makes me want to jump into a volcano. The compilation starts to get reggae-ish towards track 6 with Elephant Man’s “Bring It.” I always like Buju Banton’s music and he has a new song (I think) called “Bobby Reds.” Other notable REGGAE artists include Morgan Heritage, Jah Cure, Pressure, and I-Wayne. I think VP Records needs to re-evaluate this compilation and showcase REAL reggae and not put any hip hop on this album to make a quick buck. This compilation really disappointed me.
Bottom Line: Leave the rap & hip hop songs off this compilation will ya!
