Vermilion are so fucking prog rock, it hurts. They’ve got the name, kinda like Marillion meets vermicelli, they’ve got the songs that are 12 minutes each (and that’s just to read the titles, let alone listen to the songs), they’ve even got the Roger Dean logo and cover art.
But musically, they’re not going for the majestic soundscapes or instrumental precision of King Crimson or early Floyd, nor are they going for the classic rock opuses of Rush, Yes or ELP. Instead, they play smart, somewhat subdued instrumental indie rock that’s more live-sounding and jazzy than other similar prog-indie bands, and, thankfully, less pretentious.
