Historically, Weston’s been corny, cheesy, whiny, snotty, and aimed at pre-pubescent girls in such a way that made me hope the band of 30-somethings weren’t actually dating the junior high school girls that attended their shows. Ugh, gross.
Anyway, I was very surprised to hear the new Weston album as it sounds nothing like them! In fact, it sounds WORSE. I don’t know how they managed to sound worse, but they succeeded. Gone is the pop-punk, in is the sludgy indie rock. Long songs clock in around 4 minutes with change, and they feature the repetitive clunky chords and soft sleepy vocals that indie rockers embrace. They have truly impressed me this time with their suckage.
