When We Fall’s first EP, “A Cry in Despair” gets an “E” for effort. The band has been around since 2003 and sprang from Swedish punk bands Bowser and The Whole Nine Yards. This record is more hardcore than it is punk, and has a lot of energy and aggression, but falls short of a really solid EP.

The interesting lyrics are embedded deeply in a lot of screaming and are difficult to understand at times. Reading the words might allow for a new appreciation of the album, but the message unfortunately gets lost when listening to the record. Their lyrics are deeply personal like “Fraction of Distress”, which opens with “Longing for the calm of a child’s mind. The bliss of Life’s no longer sparkling in our eyes.” Other songs like “No Retreat No Surrender” lean toward being a bit more political.

These five songs are similar and have a way of blending into each other. When We Fall begins to work on their debut full length, which comes out this summer. Their new album will turn out to be a lot more interesting if they break up their style a bit and throw out some curves to keep the new album more exciting. This band is talented and has some potential to keep the hardcore scene alive.

Bottom Line: Give them a chance, they’re from Sweden.
Notable Tracks: “A Cry in Despair” for being just that.
