There are a lot of Celtic rock & punk bands out there these days, but one band that always stood out from the others was the Young Dubliners. The very first time I heard them, they did the theme song to the failed Gabriel Byrne sitcom, Madigan Men. Yes, I actually watch this show but thankfully I did since I discovered the Young Dubliners. They have had several albums out now and keep topping themselves with each new album. This time, the band pays tribute to their Irish music roots and cover traditional songs, as well as a few Pogues songs!

YD start their Irish cover album with the traditional song “Follow Up to Carlow.” You may have heard this song before by the band, and that’s because they did the song on their Breathe album. There are actually a few other tracks they have done before, like “Foggy Dew” and “Rocky Road to Dublin.” I always think they do the best version of “Rocky Road to Dublin.” That Dropkick Murphys version is just so messy. I loved the Young Dubliners covering those tracks on their earlier albums and glad to see they re-surfaced them again. After all, this is an album of traditional Irish songs, and might be good for someone who’s never heard these songs before. Their covers of the Pogues’ “If I Should Fall from Grace with God” and “Pair of Brown Eyes” are well done. It’s always interesting to listen to covers of really well-known songs. They pay tribute with the Pogues by keeping with their style, but at the same time changing things around slightly. Keith Roberts’ vocals sounds great (particularly well on “Pair of Brown Eyes”), and the rest of the band seem to be having a great time playing these songs as well. Each song they do is great, and you don’t get the urge to skip a track. Just play the album, drink a pint, and enjoy the songs! “With All Due Respect: the Irish Sessions” was fun to listen to but now I want to hear some new original songs from the Young Dubliners. Start writing guys!

Bottom Line: Fantastic 6th album from this L.A. based Celtic Rock band!
Notable Tracks: Follow Me Up To Carlow, Fall from Grace With God, Weila Waile, Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore, Pair of Brown Eyes, The Leaving of Liverpool, Auld Triangle
