From Japan comes Susumu Mukai — a DJ looking to combine fun electro-dance with disco irony, while avoiding sounding too mainstream and pandering. With the heavy disco basslines and solid, predictable rhythms are also cool scratchy guitars, and a general inventiveness and weirdness without being inaccessible. (For example, check out the strange Middle Eastern melody and faux-record scratching on “Street Surgery 2”, and the spaghetti-western-in-a-Eurotrash-club hi-jinx of “Make Love Not War” and “J. Shivers Theme”.)

All the tunes are fun and bouncy in their weird way, including gems “Serious Trouble”, “Painless”, and recent single “Spiral”. Excellent, inventive stuff for electro fans willing to take an excursion outside their comfort zone.

Bottom Line: Fun, inventive electro from Japan.
