Season 7 was bittersweet in many ways for Buffy fans. Fans knew, going in, that this was pretty much the last season without a note from a higher power. The writing in some of the later seasons had slipped a little (seasons 5 and 6 are considered by some to be the “”). I say “bittersweet” in that the writing team really stepped up for the final season, giving fans a season that they could feel happy with. Certainly, some of the fan-base was alienated by the “girl-power” motif of the entire second half of the season, but the show’s demographics clearly skewed to the “15-25 year old female” side, so they were definitely writing to their core audience.

Overall, it was definitely a passable effort, a final season “worth watching”, even for this reviewer who was brought into the Cult of Buffy a bit late to the game.

The first complaint with these DVDs is one I’ve had with every release of Buffy DVDs since the beginning. Give me a “Play All Episodes” menu item. Making me “select episode, press play, watch episode, select ‘Back To Main Menu’, go to next episode”, repeating that process over and over again four times per disc is just stupid. Every other TV series seems to have this part figured out already.

The extras, however, include the usual assortment of TV Series paraphernalia – Season summary, commentaries from the series creator Joss Whedon on selected episodes, a couple featurettes of questionable value, and always amusing outtakes. This season also adds something unique in that there is footage from the series wrap party added. The extras, overall, are about average in their quality and content.

Overall, this set is highly recommended, even if you skipped some of the later seasons to get there. Like any show with story arcs, you might be a *little* confused if you skipped earlier seasons, but it’ll all work itself out nicely, believe me.

Favorite Scenes: “Chosen”, obviously, has to make any list of good episodes in this season, given it is the Series Finale. Also, it had a very cool reference to both Dungeons and Dragons, AND Homestar Runner’s Trogdor the Burninator in one breath, so how convenient is that? I’ve also kind of been a fan of “Selfless”, because we get to see a bit of Anya’s past in it, how she became a vengeance demon, and all that.
