I’ve been meaning to watch Harvey Birdman but haven’t gotten around to watching it until now. Of course i’m late in the game since this is the third and final volume from the Adult Swim show. While it’s kind of hard to pick up on what the show is about without seeing any older episodes, you can still get the jest of things. If you liked the other two volumes, i’m pretty sure you’ll like this Volume as well.
Harvey Birdman used to be a second rate super hero, who absorbed powers from the sun. Now he’s an awful attorney, yet works at a great law firm. He stills manages to wear his Bird suit over his business suit, all the time. I hope he washes that thing! In most episodes, Harvey Birdman and his legal team of other masked Bird superheros help him try, convict and defend other cartoon characters. One day it could be Scooby Doo and Shaggy for marijuana charges, and then it could be one of the bears from the Hair Bear Bunch for mauling an entire fast food restaurant. Some of the final episodes are about the return of Bird Girl, a spoof on Turner Classic Movies, Harvey has a run in with the Deadly Duplicator, Potamus consumes radioactive pellets that turns him into the creature, Phil Ken Sebben dies, Harvey Birdman is forced to be a juror at his own trial and then he has to re-do all the trials he’s ever done. But he has other things to worry about in that episode, and needs the help of the other Bird people.
Since I never saw an episode of Harvey Birdman, it was kind of hard to catch up and figure out what the show was really about. After watching all the episodes, I’m still kind of lost because the show is just nutty and all over the place….Just like most cartoons on Adult Swim. The cartoon series definitely has its moments but I’m not sure if it’s as good as other Adult Swim shows. Or maybe this Volume DVD had too many inside jokes and I was completely lost. I do like when iconic Hanna Barbera characters were on trial for various things. The Magilla Gorilla episode was quite funny because the gorilla was so damn annoying. I like the episodes Turner Classic Birdman and Sebben and Sebben Employee Orientation episodes, just because they were different from the other episodes in this volume. But they were also really funny!
There aren’t a whole lot of extras on the DVD set but there are some to please the fans of the show. I liked the final record featurette, because it’s just three segments where you see the voice actors doing their thing. Maurice LaMarche was in one, and was making Gary Cole laugh so he must have been doing something right. The people behind the show did a prank on actor Chris Edgerly, who does the voice of Peter Potamus. They pretty much gave him papers of every name they can think of, in alphabetical order, and he was reading them off. He didn’t even get out of the A’s until he figured out what was up. It was hilarious! Also included on the set is deleted scenes, a joke timeline and a few other things.
If you enjoy Harvey Birdman, you’ll want to get this final volume on DVD. I thought the show was funny but could have been better & funnier.
