Outl4w are a four piece punk band from England who is made up of three brothers and the drummer. The punk music that they play will certainly not break any new ground in the punk community. What sets them apart is their age…I seriously don’t think that any member of the band can drive a car yet.
Even though the members of Outl4w are young, they do have some talent to be able to pick up an instrument and play at such a young age. That’s pretty impressive. Hell, it’s more than I could do now. What doesn’t impress me is the fact that they play the simplest form of music known to mankind…punk. Most of their songs on this DVD seem like nothing more than gibberish, and about as good as any Sex Pistols song to boot.
The DVD was very lackluster. The runtime was about a half an hour with nine tracks on it. The sound quality was terrible and sounded as if it was recorded in a garbage can. It also looks like the setting of the show was much the same. It also looked like the band was playing to a kindergarten class. The video was decent and the camerawork was steady yet grainy, but when you throw that in the mix with the terrible sound quality and unintelligible songs, you get a DVD that looks homemade and a sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine. I’m wondering if the kids made this themselves? Everything seems to kid-friendly to be considered punk rock here.
In closing, there wasn’t anything that impressed me with this DVD other than the age to rock ratio of Outl4w and their ability to go on stage and excite 14 year old girls like I never could. Yes, they could play their instruments well, but when it comes to translating a live performance to a DVD for home entertainment…they really missed the boat. If Outl4w keep rocking like they have been, who knows…maybe in five or ten years they’ll be rocking out to stadiums worldwide. Or maybe they’ll realize that mimicking the Sex Pistols isn’t the way to go.
