The Bullshit detectors known as Penn & Teller are back with another compelling season of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! The duo come back strong after a lackluster third season with better topics, funnier jokes and just an overall better season.
If you don’t know what Penn & Teller Bullshit is, it’s a half hour TV show where they attack things that are taboo to people. The duo make the show interesting and hilarious at the same time, and that’s certainly hard to do. They seem to have a big research team and take the time to look into things before speaking about it. Each week they take a certain topic and run with it. They’ll have experts from both sides of the argument on the show. You know which side Penn and Teller are on but they like each side to represent themselves. Usually the people being interviewed make themselves look like idiots, which doesn’t help their case. If people don’t go on their show, they will still make fun of them and their beliefs/job/etc. Some of the topics they cover in the fourth season are: The Boy Scouts, prostitution, the death penalty, Loch Ness monster & Bigfoot, Ground Zero, pet love, reparations, and abstinence. They are a few other episodes in that season but those are the most notable ones.
Like I said above, Penn and Teller return to top form after a mediocre third season. With that season, they just seemed to pick crappier topics and some of the jokes fell flat because of that. Some of the edge was gone, but it has thankfully return with the fourth season. The first episode is about the Boy Scouts and I just never realized that the organization was run by a religious group (The Mormons). But then again, there has been a lot of scandals lately with the Boy Scouts kicking out gay men so I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Penn & Teller have a funny study where they send two teams to take part in boy scout activities. No not THAT. One team was straight and the other was gay, and the gay team did everything better than the straight team. I thought the prostitution episode was great because it always baffled me that it’s illegal in almost all states except Nevada & another State(?). They mention the old Carlin quote where he says, “if selling is legal and fucking is legal. Why isn’t selling fucking legal?” So they pretty much say it should be legal, because then the women who chose to do it can report incidents to the cops if something bad happens. But they also tell us that the ladies go for weekly checkups for STDs & diseases and everything seems very controlled & regulated. Well the ones in Nevada & freelance do that. I’m not talking about the skank whores of NYC though.
The death penalty and the ground zero episodes were both very strong. I’m against the death penalty because there are people who aren’t guilty but still happen to be on death row. That’s what this episode is mostly about. I’d rather see people living in a prison for the rest of their life instead of ending their misery. Seems like an easy way out. The show goes into gruesome detail about past death penalty executions and how some of them went haywire. People getting their face melted off from the electric chair, hangings where the prisoner just hung there for days and other horrifying information like that. The Ground Zero episode was about the whacked out plan that Gov. Pataki and others were coming up to replace the old site of the World Trade Center buildings. A million plans were developed but each one seemed stupid or implausible. In the end, Penn and Teller say that we should just build the same exact buildings as a big FUCK YOU to the terrorists. I agree with that, but god knows I wouldn’t want to work in those buildings after they were put up.
This season was on par with the first two seasons and Penn & Teller definitely get edgier and edgier with each season. There’s a lot of great topics this time around and the jokes don’t fall flat like last season. There aren’t too many shows out there that you can laugh at and be informed at the same time but Penn & Teller Bullshit succeed. If you haven’t seen this season yet, be sure to check it out. The 5th season of the show is coming out March 22nd on Showtime so i’m looking forward to that as well.
