I was quite happy to hear about this being released on DVD, being that I loved them when I was a kid. Anyone who grew up in the 60’s should remember this, and many from the 80’s (Such as myself) probably remember the re-runs.The series has no true start and zero continuity. The plot is rather cheesy, decent animation for the time it was created, but still cheesy when brought in the light of today. Even with that said, it was a blast to watch these over again!

Everyone should know the story of Spider-Man, but going on a whim and assuming some chum stain doesn’t, I will explain. Peter Parker was at an experiment showing that was dealing with radioactive rays. A spider got contaminated with radiation and bit Peter giving him the ability to cling to walls, lift 10 times his strength, acquired amazing agility and stamina as well as heightened senses. The webbing he made himself and is in little vials under his suit on the wrist. After attaining these powers, super villains randomly appear and he fights them. Simple enough, aye?

The series had many episodes that were really 2 episodes in 1. Every now and then there was one full episode instead of the shorts. There are 77 plot lines on a quoted 52 episode run to give you a gist of how short some are. Anyway, he fights a mixture of great villains in the series like Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Doc Oc, Green Goblin, Kingpin and Electro. He also has a number of episodes with one timers and joke enemies such as “”, A big metal monster that eats metal and throws molten steel at you and Parafino – the man who makes wax sculptures that can come to life but apparently melt under such extreme heats that mere mortals are the only ones who can stand in the mighty gale of heat! You can expect plenty of Spidey one liners straight from the comics and of course the theme song, “Spider-Man”, that every one and his mother thinks they can sing for 10 minutes without even knowing the damn lyrics! The main joy of this set is the nostalgia trip. You will remember watching it as a kid, you will laugh at the animation and dialogue and you will be very entertained; for the first half of each disc anyway.

This is a great box set that will eventually wear off its novelty after a month or less for most. It will be a shelf piece collection for the rest, and it will be a “Favorite series ever!” by Kilmore the Mighty in mom’s basement.
