I am sad to write that this is the final season of the wonderful sci-fi television series, Stargate SG1. With the addition of new cast members last year (seasoned sci-fi veterans Ben Browder and Claudia Black, both of Far Scape fame) I had hoped that the series would live on for a few more years. Their presence in the series complimented the already talented ensemble that included Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, and Christopher Judge. Add to the mix, the wonderful motion picture actor, Beau Bridges, and you have a recipe for fun, and exciting television viewing.
Robert Picardo, of Star Trek Voyager, shows up from time to time, as well as do several other sci-fi alums of different popular series from the 90’s and 01’s. It is great fun to watch those actors play roles that are, in most cases, completely different from the ones they are remembered for. It keeps the viewer on his or her toes. I looked forward to seeing their performances. They added an extra special intrigue for this reviewer.
Season 10 continues where Season 9 left off. The cast faces off with a powerful race of beings called the Ori. The Ori are highly evolved. They originated from the human race. They possess incredible psychic and technological powers. They call themselves gods’. And, they want you, and you, and you, and you, and me, and….well, they want everybody in the solar system to convert to their religion and worship them. Or else!
Those who resist the Ori die. And boy do folk die in season ten. Matter of fact, whole planets of people seemingly disappear (but I am getting ahead of myself. And, I don’t want to give away too much of the plot.) Needless to say, there is a whole lotta shakin’ and movin’ going on at Stargate Central.
There are 20 episodes in this collection. Just about every other one strays a bit from the Ori theme. That gives the viewer a chance to unwind from the mounting tension between our SG1 heroes and the evil Ori. In these other episodes, we find the cast in both familiar and unfamiliar territory. For instance, in one segment, Claudia Black’s character, Vala, looses her memory. Her location devise is removed from her body by kidnappers and the Star Gate crew has one heck of a time finding her. During the episode, we get to see what an incredibly fine actress Ms. Black is. I was almost moved to tears by her performance in one scene. She can be both comedic, and downright gut wrenchingly dramatic.
Amanda Tapping too had an opportunity to show some versatility as an actress. Disappointingly, her scenes were not long. We only get a brief glimpse of the depth of her acting versatility.
During this final season, the members of SG1 get the chance to visit Stargate Atlantis. It was fun to watch cast members of both programs interact. That doesn’t happen too often in TV land. I would like to see that kind of thing more.
As a whole, I thought The Complete Tenth Season of Stargate SG1 was a worthwhile investment. Any fan of science fiction, or fantasy, would be well pleased with their purchase. The series is historical for running 10 years. And, it ran for ten years because it is good entertainment. But, fear not all yea fans of Stargate SG1. A Stargate SG1 movie has already been made. It will be out on DVD in 2008.
Happy viewing.
