It’s almost been 20 years since the Queers released their first 7 inch, but now they just released their very first DVD. The DVD isn’t a full concert (I wish it was) but this is a collection of live footage, music videos, behind the scenes stuff and interviews. If you love the Queers, you’ll enjoy this DVD!
I liked the Queers since 1996-97, when “Don’t Back Down” came out and been a fan ever since. I saw them live once, at the hole in the wall club Sea-Seas, in Moosic PA. The show had to be around 1998 or 1999. Like with certain Sea-Seas shows, barely anyone would show up if it wasn’t a tough guy hardcore show and that was the case with the Queers show. I felt bad for the band because there was maybe only 25 people there, including the opening bands. But the Queers still played on, and played super fast and just didn’t give a shit. I couldn’t believe how much louder and faster they played their music live. Sadly, that was the only time that I saw the band perform. Maybe I’ll get the chance to see them the next time they are in NY since their new awesome album just got released.
Like I said in the opening paragraph, this isn’t a full-length punk rock concert but lots of different footage from all over. I would have liked to have seen a full concert instead of this approach but those things cost money so maybe eventually the Queers will go the full concert DVD route. The footage they ended up using showcases their energetic live shows and their most memorable punk rock songs. The video quality is pretty much bootleg quality in some songs, and decent quality in others. In between songs, Joe Queer is interviewed and discusses how punk rock was back then, and how it is now. He takes digs at My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, and all those other bands a few times and I don’t blame him. He also talks about not wanting to open up for bands he doesn’t like, such as Bad Religion and NOFX. Can’t like everybody right? The interview was great to hear because Joe Queer tells it like it is, and doesn’t hold back anything. I liked watching the music videos that the band did, plus there’s an unreleased animated video for “I Can’t Get Over You.” Seeing the video of “Punk Rock Girls” is what got me into the band in the first place, so it was nice to see it again. The concert footage was okay for me, I just wished the quality was a little bit better. You get to see a lot of songs being played on this DVD. I guess it’s a nice thing that they have a lot of short songs.
Obviously having a full length concert would be better than what is being presented on this DVD but we’ll take what we can get. If you like the Queers, you’ll most likely enjoy this DVD filled with concert footage, interviews, music videos and more!
