With a name like A Verse Unsung, I prepared myself for generic emo/screamo/mall punk. I even got my emo lexicon ready to describe its suckiness. Fortunately, A Verse Unsung manage to dabble on the fringes of emo without ever actually getting there. Instead, this is some heavy melodic rock with decent touches of emotional catharsis. Okay, so it’s a bit emo, but far closer to At The Drive-In than, say, Saves the Day. The guitars are heavy, the songs make decent use of loud-quiet crescendos, tempo changes, and quite well written songs that transcend basic verse-chorus-verse structures. In fact, I’m almost starting to like this, which scares me a little. Because this usually isn’t my type of music. But it’s moody, well-produced, tight and performed quite adequately. I guess the only thing is that they sound like so many other bands. But then again, at least they do this stuff pretty well.

Bottom Line: Above average heavy rock with hints of emo, but not enough to make it lame.
Notable Tracks: Give It Up, Cali
