It’s hard to believe Dead Kennedys have been around for more than 25 years. To help celebrate their anniversary, Manifesto Records has re-released “Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables”, which is now remastered. Alternative Tentacles should have been the one to re-release DK stuff but that’s part of the whole Jello/Other Member feud that has been happening for years. I guess it’s up to you on which side you are on. I usually lean towards Jello’s side but hearing a remastered version of this album isn’t so bad after all! Plus there’s a special bonus DVD for fans to check out. The DVD has a 55-minute documentary about the band, including interviews and live footage. I’m sure Jello won’t be happy with this is being re-released for some reason, but I’m happy the album is getting the remastered treatment.
I can’t decide what DK album is my favorite because they are all equally great. Dead Kennedys are my favorite punk band and always have been. Though, not the band that currently exists, but I honestly can’t say I’ve actually seen that band live yet. Some of my favorite DK songs are on this album like “When Ya Get Drafted,” “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” “California ber Alles” and “Holiday in Cambodia.” Although, I actually prefer “California ber Alles” and “Holiday in Cambodia” off the “Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death” album. It just sounds newer, and more importantly, better! This album sounds great with the new production, but it still contains that old vintage sound. This album is just classic in so many ways that’s kind of hard to describe. If you ever considered yourself a punk fan, and don’t have this album by now, well you should be ashamed of yourself. Really, stop listening to that shitty mall punk and pick up some real punk. Obviously, get this album first since it’s The Dead Kennedys first album, with the original lineup. Ted was on drums for only this album I believe and then Peligro took over. But if you want a newer version of this album, and want to see a decent documentary on the band, then get this. If you support Jello, than don’t get this, and listen to your old records.
Bottom Line: Remastered=good!
