The Giver is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce, and stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites and um Taylor Swift? Didn’t know she started acting but not surprised. The Giver is another utopian type of tween movie (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.) and I haven’t seen it yet. Not sure I will or not but the score by Marco Beltrami sounds great!
You might know Beltrami’s work from Scream, Hellboy, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and most recently World War Z and Snowpiercer. I loved his score for Hellboy especially and I might add this score to my favorites from him as well. “Main Titles” opens up the album and gives you a sense of all the themes that you’ll hear throughout the score. It’s my favorite track on the album but there’s plenty other tracks worth checking out as well.
“Color” is another standout track. It has light piano key strokes with soft singing in it, and then slowly builds up with strings. Many of the tracks are under 2 minutes though. As soon as you’re getting into the track, it’s over. Despite the short tracks, The Giver is still one of my favorite scores of the year. It just goes to show you how much a true orchestrated score can make an impression on you.
Bottom Line: One of the more interesting film scores I heard this year, too bad the movie is probably a bore.
