The Yum Yum Tree remind me in many ways of the Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield’s band in the early 1990s. In fact, much of the Yum Yum Trees’ sound is reminiscent of that era, with jangly distorted guitars, tender female vocals, and the right mix of rock and pop hooks. Nothing on this album is revolutionary, but that does not take away from the strong songwriting and the fact that I just plain liked it. Sometimes bands don’t need to sonically invent the wheel to be interesting. As in the case of this band, strong songwriting and a good vibe makes for fun music.
Not every song is as good as the other, but there are some really catchy power pop tracks on this album. With this being their debut album, I can only hope for more strong music from them. It would be warmly welcomed, especially in an era when too many bands are failing at being inventive, it’s good to know there are bands that make safe music, and do it pretty well.
Bottom Line: Catchy power-poppy 90s rock with female vocals and some nice songwriting
Notable Tracks: Tetherball, Februaries, Factor Me Out
