Pitchfork.tv: When Pitchfork.tv launched last Monday, we were pretty psyched to finally show the world what we’d been cooking up since last summer. We thought there might be some people out there looking for new ways to see their favorite bands experiment with the way they create and perform music, people who wanted to watch music videos on a high-res player, maybe some people who really wanted to check out an indie film or documentary in its entirety. We thought, hey, maybe be the end of the month some people will start swinging by.
Well, the response was just crazy. In fact, it was so crazy that even we had trouble finding the words to express it until our stats-tracker put it in numbers. That’s right: A week to the day it hit the web, Pitchfork.tv had broken one million video plays.
So we thought: Huh, how can we thank everyone who came by and checked it out? Well, heck. Let’s add more stuff! And so, today sees the premiere of a secret session (and interview!) at Columbia University’s ADP Literary Society by none other than Vampire Weekend. Recorded the day before the January release of their self-titled debut album, the session took place (where else?) at the Upper West Side dorm where the band played its first shows, with a little help from a Julliard-trained string trio.
Also showing now at Pitchfork.tv is the “One Week Only” debut of Eating Sleeping Waiting and Playing: A Film about Air on Tour by Thumbsucker director Mike Mills. Shot during the French duo’s 1998 Moon Safari tourand seeing re-release this week as part of Astralwerks’ expanded 10th anniversary edition of Moon Safarithe film is an abstract verit look into the bands life on the road.
And then there’re all those music videos! Recent highlights include exclusive premieres of new videos by M83, Xiu Xiu, Beach House, and yesterday, Animal Collective’s brand new “Water Curses,” from the forthcoming EP of the same name (due the first week of May on Domino Records). Be sure to check back later this week for the crystal-sharp Pitchfork.tv debut of Bjrk’s mind-blowing “Wanderlust” video.
And that’s not all: In the coming weeks, we’ve got exclusive performances coming down from Sigur Ros, Broken Social Scene, No Age, Battles, Yeasayer, and lots more. If you haven’t come on by yet, check what our peers are saying:
“I am probably not supposed to say this, but Pfork’s brand new online channel is pretty unbelievably great… Goodbye, productivity.” (MTV.com)
“Shaping up to be the Peel Sessions of online video.” (Wired)
“The future of music is back.” (Globe and Mail)
“We no longer have to cry into our cereal about the inevitable demise of MTV.” (BlackBook)
Keeping in mind, this is just the beta version. In the coming months, we’ll be adding all-new features allowing you to customize the way you watch Pitchfork.tv. And yup: We’ll also be gradually stepping up the amount of daily content so you can bug out for days on end. Stay tuned! The best is yet to come
