
The first acts for The Levellers’ excellent festival Beautiful Days have been announced! The festival will take place between August 20th – 22nd 2010 at Escot Park, Devon, England. Some of the notable bands playing this year include: James, Newton Faulkner, The Wailers, Levellers, Fairport Acoustic Convention, Billy Bragg, Slackers, Easy Star All-Stars, Citizen Fish, New Model Army, Aggrolites, The Alarm, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and 3 Daft Monkeys. One of these years, I’d like to venture over to England for this festival, but who knows if I’ll ever make the plunge to do so. More bands and other news will be announced shortly. Billy Bragg is making headlines again, this time for refusing to pay taxes because of the “fat cat” bonuses that the Royal Bank of Scotland gets with British people’s tax money. The second annual Harvest of Hope Fest (HOH Fest) has announced the initial lineup for their multiple-stage music festival that will take place March 12th – 14th in sunny St. Augustine, FL. The festival serves to raise awareness and provide financial support for the Harvest of Hope Foundation, a charity organization that aids migrant farm workers across the country.

There’s not much going on in the news so I’ll just keep posting videos. Billy Bragg and Florence and the Machine covered the Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” in a live session on BBC Radio 1 for the Rob Da Bank show. While it’s always interesting to hear covers of the Pogues, this one could have been a little bit better. I like Billy Bragg’s part of course but not sure I like Florence and the Machine’s part of the song. It lacks a certain emotion I guess? It’s just not the same as Kirsty MacColl singing it with Shane MacGowan. It could be that she was doing it live and reading the lyrics and comes off, kind of boring? I don’t know, you be the judge and watch the clip below:

Billy Bragg will be heading to the Great White North in November for some shows. After a brief visit to Germany on November 7th, he will be opening the Canadian tour in St Johns, Newfoundland at Holy Heart of Mary Auditorium. He plays Toronto on November 17th. View more dates below:

Billy Bragg is coming over to the states for a few gigs! Before then, Bragg has some gigs to perform in the UK and Ireland. on 29 August, Billy’s rewritten libretto for the choral version of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony will receive its United States premiere in Los Angeles, California.

Billy Bragg is coming over to New York to do 2 one-off shows. He’ll be playing Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday gig in New York at Madison Square Garden. He will be joining Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, John Mellencamp, Juanes, Arlo Guthrie, Ani DiFranco and Michael Franti.
