When it was announced that Cursive and Alkaline Trio were touring together, I think every little emo-hearted punk let out a girlish squeal. After all, it was Alkaline Trio and Cursive. Unfortunately, Saturday’s sold-out performance at Chicago’s the Metro did not exactly live up to expectations.

Less than a year after releasing their Summer Fences EP, Castevet headlined their record release show for The Echo & The Light at Subterranean last weekend. Taking the stage after midnight, the group displayed an explosive combination of indie, emo, punk, and instrumental. It’s almost as if the group single handedly picked the best element from their favorite bands and magically placed them into their songs.

A lot can be said about bands that decide to reunite to tour. Of all the reasons why, I can think it is safe to attribute the main cause to nostalgia. According to Merriam-Webster, Nostalgia is a noun and has two meanings: 1. the state of being homesick 2. a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition. I have only ever met two types of people in this world, diehard Weakerthan fans and people who have never heard of them. I always felt myself as some sort anomaly because I like them, but I’m not in love with them. I always found it difficult to listen to more than four songs in a row because singer John Samson’s voice is too sweet for my taste. It at times borderlines on whiny no matter how good their albums might be (and they’re damn good). With that said, I walked into Friday night’s show with trepidation. I was more than happy to be proved wrong.

“I like bright light; I get scared in the dark”
It was with that phrase that Cymbals Eat Guitars’ singer Joseph D’Agostino essentially introduced the band and started the set. Opening with the six minute “And the Hazy See,” Cymbals Eat Guitars wasted no time getting into a ferocious pace.

CoCoComa’s sound harkens back to the stripped down New York garage band revival. You know when they said that sound was coming back with The Hives, The Strokes, and The Vines. Well no one bangs their drums as hard as this band. CoCoComa is a glorious mix of pounding beats and danceable/singable/drunk-able harmonies. You just can’t go wrong. The only sad thing is that it was a Monday and I had to go back to work the next day.
