Emerging from the deeply seeded punk rock culture of Salt Lake City, Utah, The Willkills have spent the last 7 years cultivating a rabid following as one of the SLC’s true guarantees both on stage and in the studio. Despite a spotted history with line-up dilemmas, the Willkills have crafted an inflammatory cohesion of ska, hardcore, and even reggae in a sound that resonates with every crowd the band stands in front of. Frontman Chris Proctor explains, “We had all been to shows where after the first 5 minutes you start to get bored with what you are seeing.
It was important for us to not fall into the same trap. We decided from the start that our music would be as diverse as possible. We had to make sure that every song whether it was ska, reggae, hardcore or old school influenced punk rock SOUNDED like the Willkills and not a rip off of who influenced us.” Combining a savvy punk rock IQ, a genuine disposition onstage, and a sound that veered away from having a formula, The Willkills became a sensation in Utah and along every tour stop just the same.
The band’s diverse sound captured the attention of Southern California record label Old Shoe. Founder Josh Stolo discussed the addition to the family, “Watching Willkills was always something new. The band incorporated such a wide range into their set that you had to pay attention. We couldn’t be more excited about working with Willkills.” As the band works on their Old Shoe Records debut release, BANG BANG, which is scheduled for a September drop date, The Willkills continue to return to their bread and butter and pound out regular dates onstage. With multiple dates scheduled throughout the summer, all while continuing to work on the record, The Willkills couldn’t be more comfortable with the pace. Chris puts it best, “Our inspiration boils down to simply the love of what we do and the scene we are apart of.” Welcome to the family.
