Bird Call is Chiara Angelicola, a Brooklyn hippie (not hipster) who has that old-grandma raspy voice reminiscent of Billie Holiday and (more recently) Macy Gray. This vocal style always sounds to me like the singer is gargling a mouthful of butterscotch pudding. I’m not that into it.
Musical accompaniment is minimal but mawkish. The waltz of the first song and the piano-and-violin background of “Bye, Bye Honeymoon” and “The Battle Outside the Gates of Your Arms” are overly schmaltzy. I guess it comes with the territory.
I can’t deny that Angelicola is talented, even if I’d rather listen to a dentist drill for 30 minutes. Jazzheads might be interested.
Bottom Line: Whatever happened to Macy Gray, anyway?
