Bomb the Music Industry! apparently hates the music industry, or something of that sort. With that in mind, they set out to record one of the most mish-mashed albums that could quite possibly be labeled as ska-punk…or not.
Formed from the ashes of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches, BTMI take small portions of just about every musical genre in the world and set it to a backdrop of synth-sounds, punk, rock and ska of the third wave variety. “Get Warmer” is very interesting but I think that the random collection of musical sounds is also what drags the album down. I didn’t think that it was possible for a band to suffer from too much variety. At times the album is hard to follow and some songs disappear into the bleeps and blips of outer space.
If you can manage to get over the extreme amounts of variety and overuse of the Atari synthesizer sounds, which amazingly I was able to do, you will realize that Bomb the Music Industry are capable of writing strong, coherent songs. The jazzy “I Don’t Love You Anymore”, the country punk of “Unlimited Breadsticks, Soup And Salad Days” and the extremely skankable “Depression Is No Fun” come to mind.
With a sound that can’t be compared to any other band that I have ever heard of, Bomb the Music Industry are fun, interesting and unique but suffer from musical schizophrenia. Some songs seem to be made up of unfinished parts of other songs that are pieced together to form one long track. Other songs just sound unfinished. At least they too hate the music industry.
Bottom Line: BTMI have an interesting and unique sound that is doomed by it’s own stretching of stylistic boundaries.
Notable Tracks: Unlimited Breadsticks Soup And Salad Days, Bike Test 1 2 3, Depression Is No Fun
