This is a remarkable singer/songwriter album. Dawn Landes has an impressively confident voice that’s like a mix of Suzanne Vega, Feist, and Aimee Mann at her most melancholic (“Tired of This Life” is like a counterpart to “I’ve Had It”).
That strong folk voice blends nicely with a lo-fi indie rock feel, while the gently shuffling accompaniment adds a little bluegrass and country. On some tunes, the background has a Vega/Bjork-like haunting and ominous percussiveness, adding more intrigue to an already deep album.
I like the sounds and feel of “Fireproof,” but often the mood and execution trumps song crafting. The best song is the first – “Bodyguard” – which digs into your head and puts up a Home Sweet Home sign. This is a great album, but it would be a perfect one if many of the other tunes had that same infectiousness.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Bodyguard, Private Little Hell, Dig Me A Hole
