The first new Iron Cross recordings in over 20 years and not much has changed. Decent oi! tunes, but with the same “boo-hoo we’re being crucified because we’re skinheads and we’re named after a German insignia and now everyone thinks we’re Nazis – why is that!??” mentality. The music itself isn’t terrible, but not anything new.

The main prob with the CD is that it amounts to false advertising. This “Iron Cross” CD is actually only four tracks from Iron Cross (who are now really only Sab Grey and some new members) and three tracks from Sab Grey fronting the Royal Americans, a country/rockabilly act, though they do cover some skinhead motifs.

The Royal Americans stuff is actually pretty unsettling. Hearing “Skinhead Girl” done as a country/twangy ballad reminds me of the white power folk ballads of Prussian Blue. That really reaffirms my position that the skinhead martyr complex is self-creating and doesn’t have my sympathy.

Bottom Line: 20 years to write songs and their best one is a Cock Sparrer cover.
