“The New Psychodalia,” the debut from Mushroomhead’s vocalist has some of the band’s sinister feel and alt-metal/nu-metal groove, but, like many debut solo albums throughout the metal world from time immemorial, it is a loose and unfocused effort. I’d go so far to say that this album is undisciplined, indulgent, and quite bad.

It’s always a risk to branch out musically, especially in the metal scene, but there are a number of “what was he thinking?” moments here. Sure, Mushroomhead’s music tends to go off in different directions, but it has a thrashy cohesiveness and, let’s face it, their slick, commercial production has certainly helped. But this album jumps around to different genres in a poorly executed and almost mocking way, like a bad Mr. Bungle album. Not recommended.

Bottom Line: Unfocused and wacky.
