I usually don’t review singles but I have to spread the word that the UK folk rock/punk band the Levellers are releasing a brand NEW album this year! There isn’t an official date yet but to help celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary, they are releasing two FREE downloads on their website (www.levellers.co.uk www.levellers.co.uk) on March 3rd. You can preview the 2 tracks on their www.myspace.com/levellers Myspace page now as well. The songs are called “A Life Less Ordinary” and “The Cholera Well” and fans might have already heard these songs live. I believe I heard them do at least one of these tracks last year in London and loved hearing it.
The band has been hard at work writing & recording new material for the new untitled album and it shows with these two tracks. The tracks have been produced by Sean Lakeman (co-produced Mercury nominated Kitty Jay & Freedom Fields by Seth Lakeman) and mixed by James Brown (Placebo, Nine Inch Nails, Jeff Beck). “A Life Less Ordinary” starts off rockin’ as soon as you hit play. Its the more rockier track out of the two and there’s nothing really else to say about it except that it’s brilliant! “The Cholera Well” begins with the drums and the fiddle, and it reminds me of a boot stomping jamboree song. This track is very similar to their Freeborn John song “Buford Stomp.” What I like about both of these tracks is that the band sounds like they have gone back to their roots (Weapon Called the Word/Levelling the Land era). They have brought back the folk sound that made them huge in Europe and these two tracks should make any Levellers fan crave more music. I can’t wait to hear the new full-length album and I seriously hope the band comes over to the States this year! It’s been 5 frigging years already, it’s time….
Bottom Line: Two fantastic songs!
Notable Tracks: Both tracks!
