Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve heard Marianne Nowottny, and at first I feared the worst. The cover is her sitting cutely, reminding me of Liz Phair’s recent album where she tried to reinvent herself as a sugary sweet pop tart. *shudder*

Luckily, Nowottny is as unique as ever with her usual twisted and creepy take on singer/songwriter pop. Weird but appealing tinned music, angular and pounding synths, and her alternately strained and sultry vocals combine for a minor key but alluring sound that’s more snake charmer than avant-pop.
