The press kit sounded interesting – an upright bass player who sings haunting melodies over frenetic, jazzy bass playing. Unfortunately, both components are wildly disappointing.
The bass playing may be fast at times, but it’s not in the least bit interesting. Bass, which can be a surprisingly acrobatic and versatile instrument, is here played relatively simply and repetitively, and often buried under other lackluster accompaniment. The singing is a drone so nasal, you can’t make out words. Everything just sounds like “ahhhh-nnnggg-ehhhhh.”
Taken together, and along with the dull, old-timey melodies, this is one of the most irritating non-emo albums I’ve heard recently and is the musical equivalent of a flat tire.
