I don’t remember much about the summer of 1995 except for one thing: the nonstop listening and singing-along-to of The Queers’ Move Back Home. That album defined the summer for me and that album has since been synonymous with all that’s good about hanging out with friends outside on long, breezy summer nights.

This album brought it all back. Regal Beagle has tapped not only the sound but the feel of Move Back Home – the consistent buzzing guitars behind Beach Boys harmonies delivered at punchy speeds in perfectly snotty but likable vocals. But also that feel of adolescence unleashed in the deadness of suburban summer. This is the soundtrack for smoking, drinking and laughing outside with friends at an abandoned playground or park. There’s even a song called “Summertime.”

It was no surprise to learn that the album was produced by Joe Queer. Or that the cover art has an Archie’s comic look. Or that they cover “Voodoo Doll.” Joe Queer and the Queers are essentially being channeled anyway. Is this a nostalgic imitation? Maybe, I don’t know, who cares. The songs are pure pop-punk brilliance harking back to when pop-punk meant fast, fun, and fuck the world, and not the guyliner emo bullshit today. The pop-punk world seems to finally be heading back in this direction and I couldn’t be happier. Since the mid-90s, pop-punk has been a forgettable, sludgy winter of emo. Here comes the summer.
