Penelope is about a girl with a pig snout for a nose. Is her parents pig people or is she just cursed? I don’t know I haven’t seen the movie yet. The movie is a modern day fairytale where the pig nose girl is cursed by a witch with the pig nose. The only way she can break the curse is if someone will ask her hand in marriage. The movie stars Christina Ricci, James McAvoy and Reese Witherspoon.

The score is done by British film composer Joby Talbot, who has composed such movies like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse and a few other things. The score is a quirky one and I’m sure it fits the movie well. I liked the score but not sure it’s something I would buy though. Also included on the soundtrack are some songs from various bands like DeVotchKa, Meiko, Paper Moon, James Greenspan and more. The DeVotchKa song on the album is “Queen of the Surface Streets” and it’s by far my favorite DeVotchKa song! I’m glad to see them get a little more exposure after their success with Little Miss Sunshine. I didn’t really like the other songs on the album because they were a little too girlie for me. If you go see Penelope and like the music from it, than be sure to get this soundtrack.

Bottom Line: A good score by Talbot and curious to hear more scores from him. The only songs I liked on the album were from DeVotchKa and Meiko.
Notable Tracks: The Story of the Curse – Part 1, The Kiss, ‘The Piano Song’ – Meiko, ‘Queen of the Surface Streets’ – DeVotchKa
