One of the geekiest pieces of music I’ve heard recently, and I’m a Rush fan.

The album is entirely samples of dialogue from the original Star Trek series over a bed of instrumental/lofi electro rock. It’s surprisingly good and trippy, though I guess it helps that I’m toasted on a bottle of Stoli right now.

Stardate Unknown kicks off with a scorcher – it sounds Kirk and Spock speaking over Ministry’s “New World Order.” There are a few other hard industrial-ish tunes, plus some guitar rock and even funky discotheque stuff, but a good portion is ambient. There’s a lot here though, but nothing overstays its welcome – there are 23 tracks crammed into an hour.

Geeky and cheeky, this is a funny novelty gift for anyone who watches too much Star Trek while smoking too much pot.

Bottom Line: There’s nothing quite like the soothing sounds of Leonard Nimoy talking over trip-hop electro.
