If you haven’t realized yet that New York City is becoming more and more of a Police State, here’s example #545. Starting May 8th, NYC will be forcing stricter rules on street musicians/buskers or just musicians in general who perform out in the street and parks. They will have to perform in 100 defined spots in the parks, and have to PAY to rent the limited area space. Yes seriously! So say I wanted to film a friend in the park, I could be subjected to a $250 summons if I don’t comply with the rules. This is complete bullshit and something needs to be done! You can sign a petition to help stop this from happening!

New York rocker Willie Nile and his band played an early show at Joe’s Pub last night. If you’ve been to a Willie Nile show before, you know why they are legendary! This was only my second time seeing Willie, but I’ve been a fan of his since 2004 when I saw him for the first time. I believe it was in 2004 and he opened for the Saw Doctors at Irving Plaza. I have no idea why I haven’t seen him since but I need to make it a point to see him more than once every 9 years!

The Beards from Australia are a comedy rock band and they have 3 albums worth of songs about Beards. Funny songs too! Something tells me they have plenty of more beard songs to sing about. The band meet up with me in Washington Square Park in New York City Wednesday and performed 3 beardly songs (“Born with a Beard,” “Shaved Off His Beard,” and “If Your Dad Doesn’t Have A Beard, You’ve Got Two Mums”). It was pretty hard to film and not laugh at these guys. This is a video you need to watch!

The Alternate Routes recently played at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City and they were nice enough to spend some time with me before their set. I filmed singer Tim Warren performing a few new songs, one song (“Stereo”) in their van and then 2 songs (“Oh My My,” “Sundress”) in their dressing room for BeforeTheConcert.com. They are great songs acoustically and they sound amazing with the full band as well! To get a nice preview of new things to come with the band, watch the videos below!

It’s that time of the year when The Saw Doctors come to the United States and rock out! They stopped at their usual spot at Irving Plaza and the show was sold out! That’s not surprising since they sell out that place in August when they play. But since it’s St Patrick’s Day weekend, everybody was out having a great time, watching the band from Tuam.

The awesome & fun bluegrass punk band Larry and His Flask perform 3 songs (“Land of the F(r)ee,” “Closed Doors” and “Hobo’s Lament”) on my new video series Before The Concert last weekend in New York City. It was before the Frank Turner concert near Webster Hall. The sessions were filmed at Cooper Square to a crowd of around 40 or so people. It was a blast, as you can see from the video! Watch the video and spread the word about it! Comments are nice too!

Joey Ramone’s last album Ya Know? came out in May but a new music video for “New York City” premiered tonight. It’s probably one of the best and coolest music videos I’ve seen this year! It features a lot of celebrities and musicians in a leather jacket like Reggie Watts, Anthony Bourdain, Andrew WK, Tim Harrington, some people from 30 Rock, and many more! I don’t even know how they filmed this. A combination of time lapse and stop-motion filming? Regardless of how they did it, this video is fucking cool and Joey would have loved it! I think anyway….

Hey remember Occupy Wall Street? It’s back for the 1 year anniversary and there will be an Occupy Guitarmy march from “Spectra Frack Pipeline Blast Zone” to Foley Square. At Foley Square, there will be a concert, teach-ins and other stuff where everybody will wiggle their fingers. It’s happening from 1pm-6pm Sunday, one day before the 1 year anniversary of OWS. I might check it out just to see Jello and Tom. If I do, I’ll have pictures up the following day.
