The Dynamics are an international band based in France, whose members come from as may countries as musical backgrounds. They inject 70s soul, jazz, and funk into a rocksteady and dub sound, and it sounds amazing. Few bands can do that deep-groove 70s sound and not sound cheesy, scummy, or dated, but The Dynamics are just pitch-perfect vintage.
In the version tradition, The Dyamics only do covers, but their sound and style makes the songs their own. Their choice of tunes is eclectic and interesting – they cover Prince, White Stripes, Dylan, Stones, Herbie Hancock, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, and more.
I normally prefer original music to covers, but like Nouvelle Vague, the execution is good enough to eclipse the need for originality. In most cases, the band improves upon the songs they cover, making even “Lay Lady Lay” listenable.
