Martin Atkins, the drummer for Public Image Limited among other bands, went to China for his latest disc and came back with an interesting mix of modern and traditional Chinese sounds, mixed with a number of western musics. The sounds vary from track to track, but everything from traditional Chinese instruments to turntables, to Chinese rapping, to random genre-mixing, permeates this album which gives it an interesting texture, but also limits its flow. Some tracks are far better than others. With different musicians on each track, it’s hard to create a proper consistency; while it is pretty cool that Atkins found and exposed some of the talent in the far east, there’s just really no way to get a good grasp overall with such a varying album.
Bottom Line: Interesting, but not as rewarding as you might hope.
