The best type of math rock is when so much is done with so little. SAH doesn’t create the richest soundscapes I’ve ever heard, but they craft some pretty interesting post-punk with only two drummers and a guitarist (and occasional faint vocals).
As you can imagine, it’s very rhythm-based. Snare work and speedily rhythmic tom fills abound, and often times the guitars are following the drummers’ leads. The guitarwork is surprisingly melodic, though certain patches of riffing can get repetitive. Tunes are 11-13 minutes each, often set up like classical pieces with different sections broken up by lulls.
SAH avoids the pretension and pointlessness often mucking up the genre, and offer up a solid album of engaging instrumental rock. Well worth checking out if you like bands on the 54 40 or Fight! roster.
