Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto formed the legendary punk band the Buzzcocks over 25 years ago, Devoto leaving soon after to form Magazine. Now, after a few generations, the duo is back in a highly innovative album that should not be considered a comeback or reunion album, as it sounds like nothing in the punk genre they helped create. If anything, Buzzkunst sounds like early 80s Sisters Of Mercy mixed with Human League, only faster: New Romantic vocals above dark, electronic soundscapes, and yet completely infectious and booty-shaking. It’s pretty damn cool. I think if 80s music kept evolving after the 80s, it would sound something like this.
