I appreciate the fuzzy post-punk, and the vocals also sound better than on their previous release – they seem to be going for a more stripped-down rock n’ roll vocal approach on this one. But the band is just too loose and midtempo, lacking passion and a faster beat to hold it all together. For example, check out “The Rise of Phantom White” – a nice, catchy indie-pop song, but it’s ruined by lackluster drumming and an overall listless feel. The next few songs have more pep, but they’re still too loose and busy to match the rock vocals in a single attack of rock n’ roll. These guys need some direction.
