Live Reviews | Oct 1st, 2001
Opening Bands: Madcap, Flogging Molly
Date: 2001
Venue: The Chance, Poughkeepsie NY
It seems every time I venture to The Chance it’s either snowing, raining or tons of fog. Where the hell do I live, Seattle?
What usually sucks about that besides the driving is waiting outside in that weather because the bands show up late, therefore are still sound testing. BUT I went late this time because I was watching the NY Rangers. So we get to the Chance parking lot, thinking that we’ll see a bunch of kids outside and all Matt and I see is a shitload of cars. The Chance decided to open the show EARLY.
They didn’t put the time of the show on the ticket, website, nothing. So most people thought that it started at 8:30pm like usual. Seems they opened the doors at 6 fucking PM! What’s up with that! So we got into the crowded club and headed over next door to Club Crannel St., where the merch was. Met up with fellow SPOJ interviewer John Zonk. He was at the show interviewing Madcap and actually came a little early to see some of the show that I missed so here’s his take on Madcap’s set. Madcap opened up for the Flogging Molly/ Bouncing Souls tour at The Chance in Poughkeepsie.
This band comes from LA, they are a four piece punk band that rocked the house, although a lot of people didn’t know them, the crowd looked to be into the band and gave them attention. In addition, there were a handful of people that did know the band, there would have been more if The Chance had their act together and started the show when it said so on the ticket. But for those that did see Madcap, it was a good time.- John Zonk OK, Bryan here again. As soon as we got into the club, Flogging Molly came on. The band I really wanted to see. So I’m glad I saw most of their set. The band that John, Matt and I missed was One Man Army.
I saw them last year with The Swingin’ Utters so…But Back to Flogging Molly. I think they are my new favorite band. They have that awesome sound and they play great live too! I actually thought they played better than the souls. I love the song “Salty Dog” and they played that last I believe. They also played some new songs and said the new album is coming out around St. Patrick’s Day. I can’t wait for that. They also played another favorite of my, “Devil’s Dance Floor.” If you haven’t seen this awesome band live yet, do yourself a favor and see them. After F.M. was The Bouncing Souls. I actually never saw them in a club environment before. I always saw them at The Warped Tour.
They played great too but I thought Flogging Molly had a more energetic set. They played lots of stuff from the newer CDs, and a few from the older ones. They also did a few covers like one from TSOL, and Billy Idol. The drummer did a great solo and then for a few seconds was playing “Walk This Way.” Overall, the bands that I saw played great and definitely check out all the bands.
