From Universal Studios Home Entertainment: Academy Award(R) Winners Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro Star in the Gripping Thriller That Reveals the Untold Story of the Birth of the CIA

Available on DVD and HD-DVD COMBO Disc April 3, 2007 From Universal Studios Home Entertainment

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ — Oscar(R) winners Matt Damon (“The Departed,” “The Bourne Supremacy”), Angelina Jolie (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Girl Interrupted”) and Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “Meet the Fockers”) star in the edge-of-your-seat thriller “The Good Shepherd,” coming to DVD on April 3, 2007 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. A tale of secrets, deception and murder played out at the height of the Cold War, “The Good Shepherd” is a gripping film that reveals the untold story of the birth of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The unparalleled, star-studded supporting cast boasts Oscar(R) winners William Hurt, Joe Pesci and Timothy Hutton as well as Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, John Turturro and Sir Michael Gambon. Tautly directed by De Niro from a script by Academy Award(R)-winning writer Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”), “The Good Shepherd” takes audiences deep into the dark world of international intelligence and espionage. Featuring over 15 minutes of intense deleted scenes that heighten the film’s suspense, the DVD will keep audiences intrigued and wanting more.

In “The Good Shepherd,” Matt Damon delivers an unforgettably powerful performance as Edward Wilson, a man whose loyalty to his country compromises his commitment to everything else, including his wife, Clover (Angelina Jolie) and son Edward, Jr. (Eddie Redmayne). After being recruited to work for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) by General Sullivan (Robert De Niro) during WWII, Wilson goes on to become one of the founding operatives of the CIA. Enmeshed in a secret world of deception and murder, and locked into a brutal battle of wits with his Soviet counterpart, Wilson’s dedication to his job and youthful idealism are slowly eroded by his growing suspicion of the people around him.

IT’S NO SECRET – CRITICS LOVE “THE GOOD SHEPHERD”

Critics everywhere praised director Robert De Niro’s spellbinding depiction of the inner workings of the early CIA. Newsweek’s David Ansen declared the film “mesmerizing” while Larry King called the film “the best spy movie ever.” Kyle Smith of the New York Post dubbed it “the Godfather of CIA movies,” and stated that “it sets a new standard for cloak and dagger.”

SYNOPSIS

Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) understands the value of secrecy — discretion and commitment to honor have been embedded in him since childhood. As an eager, optimistic student at Yale, he is recruited to join the secret society Skull and Bones, a brotherhood and breeding ground for future world leaders. Wilson’s acute mind, spotless reputation and sincere belief in American values render him a prime candidate for a career in intelligence, and he is soon recruited to work for the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) during WWII. As one of the elite founders of the CIA, working in the heart of an organization where duplicity is required and nothing is taken at face value, Wilson’s idealism is steadily eroded by a growing suspicious nature, reflective of a world settling into the long paranoia of the Cold War. As his methods are adopted as standard operating procedure, Wilson develops into one of the Agency’s veteran operatives, all the while combating his KGB counterpart. However, his steely dedication to his country comes at an ever-increasing price. Not even his wife Clover (Angelina Jolie) or his beloved son can divert Wilson from a path that will force him to sacrifice everything in pursuit of this job.
