Avagami are an experimental synth-pop duo from Chicago, who got their name by combining avocado and origami, two things I like very much.

The songs keep to a listenable, sturdy structure that they fill with great Casio work, horns, percussion, and various other instruments and sounds. Unfortunately, they have to prove how weeeiiiiird and different they are with astoundingly stupid and faux-falsetto vocals. Imagine Ween at their most irritating and raise it to the power of retarded.

It bothers me because they would otherwise be pretty good. I like when bands add some new angular twist, but sometimes you get bands like Avagami that lack confidence or restraint, and so take their differentiating feature too far into the realm of the inaccessible. Instead of being a modern and interestingly experimental take on new wave or Casio pop, they sound like schmucks.

Bottom Line: Experimental casio pop = good. We-so-crazy vocals = retarded.
