For corporate rock, these guys sure aren’t catchy. They’ve got the gloomy production of Chicago-style garage bands, matched in bogginess by the low, monotone vocals that border on tone deaf. The whole package sounds like a Steve Albini-produced band playing underwater. Like, New Jersey water. But “Head of Steam” shows the band could write a straight-up toe-tapping pop song, at least in a very bottom-of-the-bog way. Still, it’s downright soulful compared to the rest of the album.

Bottom Line: Ian Curtis fronting Dinosaur Jr., only crappy
