David Julyan and Christopher Nolan have been on & off collaborators throughout the years, but they aren’t as notable as Spielberg/Williams, Burton/Elfman, or Cronenberg/Shore. Each time Julyan composes a score for Nolan (Memento, Insomnia); he creates a subtle, ambient score that fits the movie well. The only downfall to that subtle approach is it doesn’t make for an interesting listening experience on CD…Unless you like that new age, ambient type of music.

The Prestige is about 2 rival magicians, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. I have yet to see this movie but I keep trying to go see it. But before I know it, the film will be already out on DVD. I hear the movie is quite good, and really interesting as well. I think I have to see the movie to truly appreciate the score because it’s too quiet to me. The score is broken up into three main sections (The Pledge, The Turn, and The Prestige) and contains tracks within those sections. Don’t worry; the score isn’t just three long tracks. I’m assuming those three things have to do with something in the movie? There really aren’t any stand-out tracks because Julyan seems like the type of composer to just have a balanced style. The score for the Prestige isn’t epic but still sounds good. Some of you may be bored with this score though. For me, I like my film scores to have some sort of recognizable motif or theme, and this film doesn’t have one. But that’s okay, not every score has to sound the same. If you like Julyan’s previous work, you’ll like this score as well.

Bottom Line: The music may fit the movie well, but it’s too subtle to listen to on CD.
