Eli’s debut album Roll With You was hit or miss with me. I liked some songs, but then some songs I just couldn’t listen to after awhile. I’m not sure why that was. Thankfully, That’s not the case with his second effort, “Come and Get It” off Capitol Records.

Eli Paperboy Reed’s newest album is cleaner, more soulful, and his voice just sounds perfect! I was immediately taken aback with the first song “I Just Got To Know,” and made me dance and click my fingers as soon as I heard it. This is some soul baby! White boy soul, but soul nonetheless. I think what’s highly noticeable is the horn section is more prominent, and resembles more of a late 60’s/early 70’s soul. His last album felt more like earlier soul to me. I don’t know what it is, but this album just seems more of a complete album than Roll With You.

One problem that I had with the last album was the slower tunes. I just didn’t like them. I think the slower stuff on Come and Get It are stronger and something I can listen to. You got songs like “Woman, Woman Blues” and “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry” that you won’t want to skip over. The song that stands out from all the others is his single “Something You Got.” Put on your dancing shoes and just groove to the soulful beats. I want this song played at my wedding; it’s that good!

Roll With You put Eli on the map, but this album will be considered his break-out album! Pick this up if you like classic soul and Motown. I loved this album!

Bottom Line: For fans of Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings and Mayer Hawthorne.
Notable Tracks: I Just Got To Know, Something You Got , Fat Mama Ramble
