The Tony Nominated musical Monty Python’s Spamalot has been extremely popular and is a hard ticket to get. Something I predicted would happen because there’s just so many Python fans out there. But I managed to see the show the first few weeks it premiered on Broadway. It’s HILARIOUS! I was a little skeptical at first but once I saw it, I hoped they would release this on CD and now it’s available for all to listen to. This is certainly something to get if you don’t want to wait a few months to get tickets. I’d recommend getting the CD after you see the show though. Listening to the CD before seeing the show live might spoil some of the songs from the musical.

The score & songs were written by Monty Python member Eric Idle, and long time MP collaborator john Du Prez. Eric Idle seems like he’s the only one still doing stuff from Monty Python and the others members moved on. But it’s a good thing Eric Idle wrote this musical because it’s excellent. This CD features all the music from the musical, along with some non-singing stuff thrown in there. Most of the dialogue and jokes you would see live aren’t on the CD and I think that’s good. They gotta get the people to see the show live don’t they? I think one song on here that is better to see live is Finland/ Fish Schlapping Dance because it’s just insane haha. I like the song “He Is not Dead Yet” and one of the best songs that wasn’t originally in the Holy Grail movie. It’s very Broadway-ish and it’s funny too! I didn’t really like listening to the slow, Lady of the Lake tunes on the CD because it just seemed too girlie for me. They are funny to see live but I prefer the other songs from the musical. I like that she is making fun of all the Diva singers but it’s something to see live instead. The facial expressions and hand movements she does is hysterical.

The show includes some non-Holy Grail songs in the musical as well like Life of Brian’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” the Fish slapping scene was in the old Flying Circus show. Plus there is some new songs that are really funny that are completely original like the Gay-outing of Lancelot called “His Name is Lancelot,” which is very similar to something Barry Manilow would sing. Plus songs like “Run Away,” “Find Your Grail,” “Laker Girls Cheer” and “Diva’s Lament” are completely new & original songs that were composed strictly for the musical. I think I laughed the hardest for the Lancelot song when I saw it live because it’s just outrageously funny! Overall, The musical is hilarious and so is the soundtrack.

Bottom Line: If you are a fan of comedy musicals, Monty Python or a fan of Spamalot and like the songs in the sho
