Youth Without Youth is the latest movie from director Francis Ford Coppola and it’s based off the novel of the same name. The novel was written by Romania’s Mircea Eliade and is about a professor who becomes a fugitive in 1930’s Europe. This is the first film score from classical composer Osvaldo Golijov, and I don’t think it will be the last. I was really impressed with this score because it sounded so elegant. You can notice in the score that there are different styles of music being represented here, because the character goes through a few countries, fleeing the Nazis. The score from Golijov reminds me of the old-Hollywood epic scores or some of the lesser-known works from John Williams. Some tracks you have the strings playing, and then you might hear a harp or accordion in another track. Some of the tracks sound very mysterious and have this haunting sound to them. Fans of Osvaldo Golijov will enjoy this album, and so will classical & film score fans as well. I’m looking forward to hearing more scores from Golijov.
Bottom Line: A very good score from Golijov, but from what I hear, Youth Without Youth is not a very good movie.
Notable Tracks: Youth Without Youth, Refugee, Laura Reborn
