Not to knock prog rock, but it’s a tough genre to be both technically proficient and also not sound completely corny. This Minneapolis trio does a pretty good job on both fronts with their Primus/Rush drumming, classic rock guitar, and indie rock vocals, but the result can sometimes be messy and weird.
The singer, with his strained-but-echoey vox, sounds a little like the guy from TFUL282, but I don’t think that’s intentional, and in any case it doesn’t meld well with the music. Occasional funk breakdowns and wah-wah guitar solos hurt more than help, as it does in any genre. Because those things are hideous. The first two tracks suffer from those things.
The CD gets better. The third track, The Rabbit, is pretty good because it’s got a lengthy jazz interlude and then rocks out all Neil Peart-stylee toward the end with what sounds like a 15-piece tom-tom set and three different china cymbals. I also dug the fourth track – the interplay between the tight drums and spacey guitars bring to mind Hemispheres-era Rush. Rock! m/
