Sick Friend – “Draft Dodger”

Sounding like a stripped-down Animal Collective, Canadian duo Sick Friend have a similar pastoral-indie-vocals-over -synthy-buzz sound. The Shins also come to mind, particularly with the softly psychedelic vocal harmonies, but Sick Friend’s production is more skeletal and avoids the chamber pop heights of these bands. As such, they sound kind of like psych-indie without the psychedelia.

The notable tracks below are real standouts but also sound more fleshed out. The other tracks have a bare-bones approach that hasn’t yet grabbed me, even at 2-minute lengths. Still, at least half of this album really stood out, and Animal Collective fans would certainly enjoy this. Looking forward to hearing more from this duo.

Bottom Line: Animal Collective-Lite.
Notable Tracks: Cottages, Seal That Would Fly, No Harm, Forest Lawn
