“Grease Fire In Hell’s Kitchen” is an album that is dedicated to high times, lost friends and low places. It’s pure punk rock from the streets of New York City and the music is as ferocious as the place that it namedrops.
I’ll admit, at first I was hesitant to put in what looked like just another hardcore album but when the first chords of the first song, “Ruined” struck, I was immediately frothing at the mouth for more. Spoiler NYC’s lead singer/bassist Alan Robert, was/is a member of the thrash metal outfit Life Of Agony and you’ll find that many of LoA’s metal influences throughout “Grease Fire In Hell’s Kitchen”, the sludgy “Suicide Hotel” in particular. Instead you are left with and oi-tinged old school punk rock album with an emphasis on the punk. Songs like “Ruined” and “Dead To Me” invoke images of Crass and the Exploited or “Mainliner” era Social Distortion, while “Liar Cheaters”, “Die Alone” and “No Worries” bring about visions of New York’s finest, the Ramones.
With an album that gets your fists pumping as well as your head banging, Spoiler NYC have released one of the most diverse straight-forward punk rock albums that I have heard in quite some time. There’s oi, there’s street punk, there’s hard rock and there’s metal. Top that with superb introspective songwriting and a tight group of veteran musicians and you have yourself one hell of a rock and roll record. Screw Life Of Agony, I hope that Spoiler NYC is here to stay!
Bottom Line: Metal infused punk rock that isn’t afraid to stretch its’ boundaries.
Notable Tracks: Ruined, Suicide Hotel, No Worries, I Hung My Head, Unpredictable
